Disaster-response tools for 625 million people, built in a week
About
The AHA Centre — the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management — is the operational coordination hub for disaster response across ten member states and over 625 million people, under the 'One ASEAN, One Response' mandate. Its job is synchronized preparedness, early warning and cross-border emergency coordination across a region facing rising typhoons, earthquakes and floods.
Challenge
Young technologists across ASEAN had ideas for tools that solved real operational gaps — logistics, emergency response, inter-agency coordination — but there was no structured way to turn those ideas into deployable prototypes inside the timeframe and governance constraints that regional disaster response demands. The work had to bridge three worlds: the standards of national disaster-management agencies, the speed of startup-minded developers, and the leadership buy-in to fast-track prototypes toward real use.
Solution
Designed and led the end-to-end HELiX AHAckathon. Co-created six challenge statements directly with AHA Centre leadership and National Disaster Management Organisations, so each mapped to a real operational bottleneck. Compressed design thinking and lean startup into a format that worked for remote participants across time zones, coached teams through rapid prototyping, and embedded disaster-management practitioners in the judging so outputs were built to a standard of operational readiness, not just demo polish.
Outcome
Six working prototypes — for logistics coordination, emergency-response workflows, inter-agency communication and situational awareness — were built in a single week by young innovators from across ASEAN, each tied to a real operational gap defined with national disaster agencies.
He didn't build the apps — he built the container, so the people closest to the disasters could build the tools themselves.
